Telltale signs that you need an eye test

Here in the UK, we recommend you get your eyes tested at least once every two years. This is the most effective way to identify changes in prescriptions or pick up on developing conditions, existing prescriptions are only valid for two years as well. . Those experiencing changes in their sight or difficulty focusing should speak to their optician sooner as extreme changes can be an indication of something more serious.

While everyone will experience changes in sight differently, there are several telltale signs that you need to book an eye test.

Eye strain or fatigue, particularly when working on a computer

Staring at a screen for extended periods places significant demand on our eyes. They are required to focus, shift and adjust to fluctuations in lighting which easily causes strain. This can manifest in blurred vision, headache or fatigue making it harder to get work done.

Difficulty seeing or driving at night-time

Lower light conditions during the evening and night make it challenging to focus at the best of times. Glare from headlights and high beams can distract or impact reaction times. There are also a number of sight-related conditions that enhance these complications, including cataracts and astigmatism.

Issues focusing on items at a distance

You may notice that focussing on items that are far away is becoming difficult. This is known as near-sightedness or Myopia, where you experience more clarity when looking at items closer to you. For example, you may have no trouble reading a text message, but struggle to identify road signs when driving.

Issues focussing on items close-up

At the other end of the spectrum, being able to see things clearly at a distance but struggling with blurred objects close up can be an indicator of Hyperopia or far-sightedness. This makes it challenging to read a book or focus on information on a smartphone.

Squinting to improve sight

If you find yourself squinting to improve focus, you are likely experiencing sight decline. When we squint, we let less light into our eyes, meaning that the light rays that do enter can be focussed more accurately on the retina. However, this isn’t a long-term solution and is something that needs to be addressed.

Experiencing frequent headaches

Headaches associated with sight are caused by eye strain and can be incredibly disorientating. Most of the time, they are easily managed with pain killers but when these develop into cluster headaches or migraines, the problems can escalate. Some headaches will also increase blurry vision and make it impossible to get through your daily tasks.
