How often do you really need an eye test?
Clear, healthy and reliable vision is something that cannot be taken for granted. Poor sight doesn’t just impact your ability to read a book or relax in front of the television; it also increases the risk of injury and has the potential to progress to more serious health conditions if left untreated. A comprehensive eye test is the most effective way to identify vision problems early and administer appropriate treatment. Here, we reveal what an eye examination involves at The Eye Establishment, and discuss how often you need to book a check.
What is an eye test?
During an eye test, our fully-trained and professional optometrist will visually check all aspects of your eye health. They will:
- Examine the front and back of your eye to assess shape and focus.
- Perform an OCT scan to create a Fundus Photo (highly detailed image) of your eye, helping us to identify any conditions that may be developing, including glaucoma
- Issue a tonometry test to check the pressure inside each eye
- Test your sight to determine whether your current prescription is still suitable for your needs
With the information gained, your optometrist will be able to review your prescription, discuss changes and provide guidance on the right eyewear for your needs.
How often do you need to book an eye test?
We recommend that you book an annual eye examination every two years, at a minimum. However, if you notice a deterioration in your eyesight or are experiencing problems, book one earlier. The sooner we can identify the cause of the problem, the quicker we can start a treatment plan. For anyone over the age of 40 with a family history of glaucoma, or anyone with a diabetes diagnosis, the NHS provides free, annual eye tests to check for signs of deterioration.
If you wear contact lenses, the NHS recommends annual eye tests too. This is because improper or extended use can sometimes cause issues with the eye. Contact lenses need to fit the curve of your eyes for comfort and must have the right prescription to prioritise safety. With approximately 250 people starting to lose their sight every single day in the UK, regular eye examinations are a necessity. Common eye health conditions can often be detected early on and treated, meaning you’ll maintain your vision significantly longer.
