History of aviator style sunglasses

Aviator sunglasses have a long and rich history as a fashion choice, with their enduring popularity showing no sign of stopping. In fact, 2025 is likely to see aviator sunglasses continue to dominate the market, with a number of leading designers and manufacturers taking their designs to the next level. We at the Eye Establishment in London are delighted to be able to offer a host of aviator options, with the likes of Dita brand sunglasses available in store and online.

Aviator origins

As the name suggests, aviator sunglasses originate from the aviation industry. The US Air Force in particular contributed to their development in an effort to provide a lightweight, effective alternative to the more traditional fur-lined goggles. Introduced in the 1930s, they were created by Colonel John A Macready in collaboration with Bausch & Lomb, and quickly gained popularity by offering suitable protection from the sun’s rays at high altitude. The original design quickly evolved into ‘Anti-Glare’ glasses in 1936, with green lenses and plastic frames which would go on public sale the following year.

Further refinement of the design came in 1939, when the frames were updated to metal and were marketed as the Ray-Ban Aviators. The popularity of aviator sunglasses would subsequently grow due to an unlikely source. During the Second World War, American General Douglas MacArthur was photographed in a pair during the landing of US troops in the Philippines in 1944. The photo quickly became an iconic image and synonymous with military bravery.

Cultural icon

It was not only the battlefield where aviator sunglasses would make their mark. The worlds of cinema and entertainment are often a breeding ground for style trends, with Hollywood helping the popularity of aviators flourish throughout the 1970s and 80s. Whether it was Elvis Presley or Michael Jackson donning a pair of the recognisable eyewear, sales of aviator sunglasses - and their many imitators - would grow exponentially. Of course, arguably the most iconic appearance of aviator glasses would come in 1986’s blockbuster, Top Gun, with Tom Cruise sporting a pair throughout the movie and in supporting promotional materials.

Ever since, they have become a staple of the eyewear industry thanks to the distinctive teardrop lens, thin rims, and gradient tint, and continue to remain a timeless accessory, blending functional design with cultural significance.
