6 tips to prepare your eyes for spring

Spring is once again on the horizon, bringing with it longer days, warmer weather and, of course, allergens for those who suffer with hay fever. Whether you simply want to look after your eye health this season, or you need advice for managing a specific condition, here are some top tips for preparing your eyes for spring.

1. Arrange an eye test

Keeping up with your routine eye tests is a vital part of your overall eyecare, but it’s especially important as we head into spring. The increase in pollen can cause itchy, watery or irritated eyes, while common conditions such as blepharitis and dry eye can become more difficult to manage in warmer weather. An optician can help you find the best solutions for irritated eyes, and recommend products to manage conditions such as hay fever or dry eye.

2. Invest in protection

As the days get longer it’s essential to ensure you have the right UV protection for your eyes. Even if the sun isn’t shining, UV rays reflect off surfaces and enter your eyes, meaning a good pair of sunglasses should be part of your daily ensemble. Be sure to choose products with a CE or UV400 mark to ensure they offer comprehensive protection. Those who wear optical glasses can also invest in a UV coating for them which helps to block UV rays, offering protection even if there’s no lens tint.

3. Stock up on artificial tears

If you feel the temptation to rub your eyes during the spring months - whether because of allergies or dryness - it’s worth getting some artificial tears to alleviate symptoms. Rubbing your eyes can introduce bacteria or release histamines which cause inflammation, creating more discomfort. Using artificial tears is a better way to manage dryness and irritation, keeping eyes healthy and comfortable.

4. Drink plenty of water
Drinking water isn’t just about ensuring we feel good - it’s also important for eye health. Dehydration limits tear production which can lead to eye strain, dryness and even vision problems, so ensure you’re drinking the recommended eight cups of water each day.
5. Eat well
Eating a balanced diet is also key to preventing common eye issues and supporting eye health. Foods that are rich in antioxidants such as citrus fruits, leafy greens, avocados and tomatoes can help to prevent age related eye diseases, while beans and lean red meat contain zinc, which promotes retina health. Carrots and sweet potatoes contain Vitamin A that helps to keep eyes moist.
6. Be mindful of cleaning products
If you usually spring clean your home, be mindful of the products you’re using. Harsh chemicals can irritate eyes, so try to choose products that have fewer harsh chemicals and be sure to open windows to reduce fumes.
