5 frame trends seen over the last five years

Glasses began to make the transition from a functional necessity to a fashion statement in the 1970s. Since then, fashion eyewear has grown in popularity, being used to elevate personal style and enhance self-expression. Today, the catwalks of various high-profile fashion shows feature not only the best outfits from internationally renowned designers, but also eyewear from premium brands such as DITA, Garrett Leight and Mykita. Here, we explore the frame trends that have dominated over the past five years.

Cat-eye frames

Cat-eye frames were popularised by stars such as Audrey Hepburn and have experienced a resurgence in the 2020s, proving to be one of its biggest eyewear trends. Celebrities such as Simone Ashley, Bella Hadid and Kendall Jenner have all been spotted sporting this iconic shape - and with cat-eye frames now being manufactured with lightweight, sustainable materials like bio-based acetate, they are not only popular with the well-heeled, but with the eco-conscious too.

Wraparound frames

Sporty sunglasses with a wraparound design have been a staple accessory in the past five years. In the early 2020s in particular, this style could be found on the noses of everyone from Dua Lipa and Rihanna to Justin Bieber and Pharrell Williams. Providing exceptional protection from the sun’s UV rays, as well as a retro, athleisure-luxe vibe, they are practical yet stylish.

Oversized frames

Whether being used as vision glasses or as a summer accessory, oversized frames have been a consistent trend through the first half of the 2020s. Iris Apfel was a famous ambassador for the oversized frame, while Jay-Z, Jennifer Aniston and LeBron James have also proudly donned the style. The appeal of these frames lies in their blend of function with fashion and their ability to add drama to any outfit.

Round frames

Round frames have been an understated trend that has quietly persisted behind the hype of vintage-inspired frames, geometric styles and aviators. For those channelling intellectual sophistication to those emulating the carefree, bohemian vibe of the 1960s, this shape has proved a favourite of the last five years. Celebs from Tom Holland and Steve Carell to Oprah and Sarah Hyland have all worn them.

Transparent frames

Transparent frames are a key trend from the 2020s, working with every skin tone and providing crisp vision with minimal distraction from the features and shape of the face. Versatile enough for everyday wear yet able to elevate an outfit, they are the perfect go-to for any occasion. Celebrities like Matthew McConaughey, Cate Blanchett and Jon Hamm have all sported this mid-2020s trend recently.
